Alex Murdaugh's Moselle home, site of double homicide, for sale

The two-bed, two-bath home sits on a quarter-acre lot, and Putman boasted the gardens and terraces as a draw for potential buyers. Plus, it has a great view of the city, she said, making it the ultimate LA outdoor space. “We feel the utmost compassion for her family and all those effected by the tragedy of her and her son’s murder,” he added. Godley and Ayers will keep most of the property, which, according to Crosby, has little value other than hunting deer and wild hogs. "They figured the best thing to do was carve out 15 or 20 acres that somebody could put some stables on or a hobby farm or just have a very nice home in the country," Crosby explained.

The listing images additionally show a dining room, which is also fully clad in wood, and large windows. The sale of the house and 21 acres does not include the dog kennels, according to WSAV. The disgraced attorney, 55, has maintained his innocence and is seeking a new murder trial. Just weeks earlier, on March 2, Alex Murdaugh was convicted of killing his wife and youngest son.

Murdaugh was convicted of two counts of murder during a six-week trial in Walterboro, South Carolina. The trial concluded on March 3, 2023, with Judge Clifton Newman sentencing him to two life sentences. "The 4 bedroom / 4.5 bathroom residence is a sprawling 5,275 square foot home that exudes character, charm, and high-end finishes," says Crosby in a property listing. “This spacious floor plan could easily be converted into a weekend hunting lodge with the capability to sleep up to 15 people,” the listing notes. Gambino said the Glassell Park area where the home is located is popular among artists, musicians and actors.

Designed by LA architect William King and built in 1982, the listing comes with several gathering spaces in and around the home, with charming gardens, a wraparound deck and a garage that could be used as studio space. The sunroom features floor-to-ceiling windows and can be accessed from the living room — as well as the primary bedroom and one of the guest bedrooms, the listing notes. Occupying more than 2,300 square feet, the property comes completely renovated — with features including a sun deck, vaulted ceilings, wood flooring, a gourmet kitchen and a woodburning fireplace. Whether the sale of the Moselle Estate House will go as quickly remains to be seen. The buyers of Moselle Farm were Murdaugh’s former neighbor, Jeffrey Godley of Islandton and James Ayer of Ehrhardt.

More in Real Estate

An estimated 3,000 people showed up for an auction of items from the Moselle estate on Thursday — three times the normal crowd, Emily McGarry, who works for the auction house, told CBS News. The Moselle house, which stands out in its surrounding with a white outlook, is characterized by front and back porches. Custom built in 2011, it also boasts mahogany doors, heart pine floors, a grand staircase, a chef's kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances and granite countertops, a billiards room and custom gun cabinets. Spanning 5,275 square feet, the custom-built main residence is made up of four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, and features a new metal roof, HardiePlank siding and refinished heart pine flooring throughout.

The jury heard about how 22-year-old Paul was passionate about caring for the property and how he spent some of his final hours surveying the land with his father. They heard how he and his friends hunted all manner of game — hogs and deer, ducks and quail — and fished throughout the estate. They also heard that Maggie, 52, often avoided staying at Moselle on summer nights like the one on which she died, put off by the bugs and humidity. On March 1, the day before they found him guilty, jurors visited the property, viewing the cramped room where Paul was blasted with a shotgun and the overhang where Maggie was gunned down with a rifle. According to WCIV, the property already may have a buyer, with the sale to be finalized in 90 days.

Local farmers James Ayer and Jeffrey Godley teamed up to make the purchase, The New York Post reported. At the time, the buyers told the outlet that they weren't sure what they were going to do with the property. The case was settled in January; surviving passengers from the incident are also included in the settlement. Around $2.7 million of the initial sale was awarded to the family of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, who died in 2019 when Alex Murdaugh’s murdered son, Paul Murdaugh, crashed a boat with himself, Beach and others inside. In June 2022, a contract was signed for the the sale of the 1,772-acre Moselle property, including the 5,275-square-foot house, for $3.9 million.

The kennels and additional surrounding land are not part of the sale, according to information from Crosby Land Company. Now, it strongly appears the home and the nearly two dozen acres included in the offering aim for a new future. The columned white house stands at the end of a driveway lined with oak trees, and has front and back porches. Buyers have another chance to buy the Murdaugh family estate, Moselle, in Islandton, S.C. The estate comes with a 1,140-square foot guest cottage, as well as 2.5 miles of river frontage that provides freshwater fishing, kayaking and other sports, it noted.

Former home of Alex Murdaugh listed for sale in South Carolina at $1.9 million

Murdaugh was convicted in March of killing his wife Maggie Murdaugh and son Paul at the rural estate, which was purchased earlier this year by James A. Ayer and Jeffrey L. Godley, according to a land deed. The proceeds of that initial sale went to the Murdaugh family's surviving son, Buster, and victims of a 2019 boat crash involving Paul, reported the Greenville News, citing a settlement approved in January by a South Carolina judge. Before the Moselle estate sale was finalized, assets from the property—including furniture, home decor (including monogrammed pillows and hunting lodge-themed trinkets), and cars—were auctioned off in Pembroke, Georgia. An employee of the auction house told CBS News that a Yeti cup (which typically costs $35) sold for $400. Another sale included the sofa set on which Alex claimed he napped on the night of the murders, for $36,000, Court TV reported.

The proceeds of the sale were divided between several parties including the Murdaugh family's surviving son, Buster, Murdaugh's younger brother John Marvin Murdaugh, and victims of a 2019 boat crash involving Paul, among others. This has happened in other high-profile cases, including the one in which Michael Peterson allegedly murdered his wife Kathleen Peterson at their North Carolina home. The sale contract was inked in June 2022, one year and one day after Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, and son Paul were shot dead near the property’s dog kennels. But finalizing the deal was complicated by the web of competing claims for the Murdaugh family’s assets.

Alex Murdaugh has since been jailed without bond on dozens of fraud-related charges, many involving the wrongful death settlement of longtime Murdaugh housekeeper Gloria Satterfield. According to the listing, the property includes 12 run dog kennels, a fully-stocked fishpond, irrigation and a rifle shooting range, among other features. The price includes the 5,200 square foot home, featuring four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, as well as nearly 1,800 acres of land.

The listing is a carve-out of the Murdaugh's larger estate, which sold for $3.9 million earlier this year and included 1,700 acres. As The Post reported, Ayer and Godley were responsible for paying for eight tracts worth a total of $2.66 million — with Ayer noting they were unsure of plans for the property at that time. The 1,700 acres family estate was purchased by James A. Ayer and Jeffrey L. Godley in March, according to the Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The hunting estate became a central part of the murder trial when the bodies of Maggie and Paul were found on a part of the property near the dog kennels on the night of June 7, 2021. The bulk of the proceeds, about $2.7 million, will go to Beach's family, as well as two survivors of the crash, the newspaper said. Another boat crash survivor will receive $100,000, while Buster Murdaugh will receive $530,000. Almost $300,000 in additional funds will go to a settlement fund for creditors and financial victims of Alex Murdaugh, among other payments to creditors and to cover legal fees. The proceeds of the sale will go to the Murdaugh family's surviving son, Buster, and victims of a 2019 boat crash involving Paul, the Greenville News reported, citing a settlement approved in January by a South Carolina judge.
